CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE: THE OYABUN OF THE NAKAMURA-KAI

“Tristan-san, people are going to die tonight,” Karasu had whispered into Tristan’s ear just as Maeda landed the finishing punch on Chen Li’s jaw.

That had caused the young man to whip around to face the Crow, lips parted and face pale, even before he saw the ghosts drift into the main hall on unseen and unfelt currents. Karasu had attempted to provoke a reaction out of him all during the fight, but this went far beyond that. It was far worse than when the Crow had suddenly wound a snake-like arm around Tristan’s shoulders and tried to kiss his cheek. Maeda had seen it and became so distracted that Chen Li got in a hit.

“STOP IT! Maeda got hurt because of you!” Tristan had said as he shoved the Crow away.

“I had to do it! Otherwise, Chen Li wouldn’t have struck one blow and how boring would that have been?” Karasu had explained with shockingly sweet puppy eyes as if Tristan could ever forget that the man was a horrible murderer, a stripper of skins. “Or are you so selfish that you don’t want Yasuo’s beautiful face marred for our entertainment? I think you are selfish, Tristan-san. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

“Don’t speak to me! Don’t touch me! Don’t even think of me!” Tristan had hissed, keeping his voice low so that if Kiyuubi actually noticed anything other than his sake cup and his noodles that he wouldn’t become concerned.

Tristan hadn’t worried about Karasu’s father noticing. Nakamura had never turned his head towards his son. Not once. So though Tristan had been sure that Nakamura knew what was going on, the Oyabun wasn’t going to confirm it with his eyes. If he did, he would have to speak up and he wouldn’t. Perhaps he couldn’t. From what little Tristan knew of the Yakuza, being unable to control one’s own son from publically groping someone in another clan would be shameful. For an Oyabun, it would seem almost suicidal. Who would follow his lead when he couldn’t control his own house? Tristan had noticed that none of the Nakamura-kai looked at Nakamura at all. Their gazes, when they did drift over, went to Karasu and then quickly away.

“I cannot leave you alone, Tristan-san,” Karasu had crooned. “It would be like asking a flower to turn away from the sun. It is against its nature. And to ignore you would be against mine.”

For Maeda’s sake, Tristan had remained silent at that moment. He determined not to engage the Crow any more. Not that it stopped Karasu. The Crow kept bumping his knee against Tristan’s. One of his arms would casually reach behind the young man and brush along his spine. He would lean in to grab something on the table so that his body rubbed up against the young man’s and blocked his view of the match with Chen Li.
